Piracy is a nightmare when it comes to digital art. Anyone can grab a piece, and throw it around like it's theirs, or even worse, sell it for profit. This puts your brand image in jeopardy, especially when you are making a living out of it. For creator and digital artists Laura H Rubin, piracy has been a serious issue for a while.
Creator Profile
Laura H Rubin is an award-winning digital artists from Switzerland. You can find her emotional drawings all across her portfolio, as they are the signature dish, it's what defines her. Her talent, her passion for drawing since she was a child, enables her to capture strong and bold emotions in the human face. Capturing facial expressions convey many emotions and language. The more you look at the portraits, the more you're able to spot different, but subtle, facial expressions, and look beyond what's on the surface.
The Problem
Being a digital artist, Laura has created a lot of digital brushes for Procreate, digital illustration app for iPad. And she decided to share them with her audience, and try to inspire other artists. She currently sells her brushes on GumRoad.
Little did she know, pirates and copyright infringement saw the character, the brand, the value that Laura brings to the industry. And they decided to infringe the work.
She reached out to us and we immediately saw the impact that piracy has on her content. With a quick Google search, we were able to find a lot of her Procreate brushes online, completely free. To make matters worse, BrushesPack.com, a famous website among pirates, is where a lot of her products were infringed and selling for a smaller price.
The Solution
Laura signed up to our platform and she immediately inputed her most popular product. A complete brushpack with over 45 Procreate brushes.
We ran several searches using our search algorithm, and within the first 24 hours, we already had found a couple of different websites that were infringing her brushpack.
The search went on, and we detected and crawled even more websites that had Laura's product completely for free. Through DMCA Takedown requests, we were able to completely remove the content on most of them, and we got ALL of them delisted and de-indexed from Google Search.
However, there was this very popular website, BrushesPack.com. This is a very famous site among pirates, and its where the most popular brushes get infringed, and selling for 80% less than the original price. This website had Laura's products, without her consent. She brought this site to our attention, and that she already tried taking action, but to no avail.
De-indexing this site was not enough, so we decided to take legal action. Since these guys were basically not reachable, we had to try different methods. We had to get really creative and try to go after their hosting, payment methods, and what not.
Eventually, our efforts were fruitful, and we came to find out that BrushesPack completely removed Laura's content from the website. Big relief for the whole team.
Summary
After detecting all these sites for infringement, among them, being a very famous nulled website, Harvel took legal action and took down most of the content on the sites, de-indexed all URLs from Google, and successfully took down all content from BrushesPack.com.
The fight does not end here. We are working around the clock, 24/7, and detecting new infringements of Laura's content. As soon as we find it, we send takedown requests, and do our best in order to keep Laura's content 100% authentic, and free of infringement.
